Why Doesn’t Your Mission Statement Actually Decide Anything? (The Change Sentence)

A mission statement can sound completely right and still decide nothing, because it was written to be read by outsiders, not used by the people running the organization. The Change Sentence is the internal version: one line specific enough to say yes and no to real things.

Why mission statements stop deciding anything

Most mission statements are written to be warm and broad, so that anyone reading them nods along. That is exactly what makes them useless for decisions. A sentence that includes everything can be used to justify anything, which means it justifies nothing in particular.

Through Impactedia, I’ve sat with founders and directors who could recite their mission statement from memory and still couldn’t tell me, in one sentence, who changes and how because of their work. The gap wasn’t sincerity. It was that nobody had ever written the working version, the one built to exclude.

Who this is for, and how long it takes

About 15 minutes. For a founder, director, or small team that has a mission statement but no sentence they actually use to say no to things.

What’s inside

  • A fill-in-the-blank sentence: because of our work, [named people] experience [specific change].
  • Four rules to check it against, so it stays specific instead of drifting back to broad.
  • A rewrite field for the clean version, plus a prompt for comparing notes if you’re not working alone.

How to get the most out of it

Write it alone first, even if you plan to compare notes with a co-founder or teammate after. Comparing too early produces one person’s sentence with everyone’s signature on it, which defeats the point. Divergence between drafts is the finding, not a failure.

What changes if you actually do this

The output is one sentence that survives four rules. The outcome is a working standard you can hold every program, partnership, and yes against. The impact is fewer commitments made because they were adjacent to the mission, when they should have been tested against it.

Next step: if this sentence is about you personally rather than an organization, The Intention Statement Builder turns a personal goal into the same kind of one-line standard.

FAQ

How is this different from a mission statement?

A mission statement is written for outsiders, warm and broad on purpose. The Change Sentence is written for internal decisions, and it only works if it excludes something you love. They serve different jobs, and most organizations need both.

What if my team’s sentences don’t agree?

That’s the useful result, not a problem to smooth over. Divergence usually means the organization has been running more than one intention in parallel without anyone noticing. The conversation that resolves it is worth the time it takes.

Do I need a team to use this, or does it work alone?

It works alone. The comparison step is optional and only applies if you’re part of a team. A solo founder gets just as much value from writing and rewriting the sentence solo.
