And a person can execute one task with total precision while being careless about everything around it, including the people the task was supposed to serve.<\/p>\n The confusion happens because both feel like the same virtue from the inside. Caring about your work and being precise about a task both produce the sensation of trying hard. But precision is narrow and immediate: it applies to this document, this call, this line of code, right now, and it can be checked. It describes something specific and immediate: the completion of this one task with full attention, not a general reputation for being a good worker.<\/p>\n The spreadsheet at Miller Center didn’t need me to be a good person that afternoon. It needed the numbers to be right.<\/p>\n Two questions, asked separately, catch most of what gets missed when the two get conflated.<\/p>\n Is this specific thing, in front of me right now, actually correct? Not “am I generally careful,” but “did I check this exact figure, this exact sentence, this exact result.”<\/p>\n Is the way I’m treating the people and situations around this task consistent with who I want to be? Not “did I finish the task,” but “did I do it in a way that reflects care for what it’s actually for.”<\/p>\n Both questions matter. Neither one answers the other.<\/p>\n Isn’t caring about your work enough to make it good?<\/strong> How is this different from the site’s guide on what mastery actually is?<\/strong> Can someone be precise on a task without caring about the work at all?<\/strong> Precision on one task and being a reliable, good worker are not the same skill. One is about this specific thing, right now.
