There is a version of professional development that looks impressive on a resume and changes nothing in practice. A course is completed and a certificate is collected. The learning happened somewhere in the process, but the application never quite followed.

2U GetSmarter, part of 2U, delivers short online professional courses in partnership with well-known universities, including MIT, the University of Oxford, and LSE. Courses are instructor-supported, run in cohorts with fixed start dates, and built around case studies, weekly assignments, and feedback rather than passive video watching.

The connection to Mastery is application. The Method treats mastery as a discipline: the commitment to close the gap between what you know and what you can actually do. 2U GetSmarter is built on similar logic, with learning designed to produce capability rather than familiarity.

What 2U GetSmarter Does Differently

The main difference is structure. Most self-paced online courses are never finished. 2U GetSmarter uses a cohort model with weekly deadlines and a support team, which creates accountability without requiring you to be on campus.

The second difference is the university partnership. Courses are developed with faculty from the partner institutions, and certificates carry the institution’s name. That improves the content and gives the credential weight in professional networks that recognize those schools.

The Honest Part

2U GetSmarter courses are a significant financial commitment for most individuals. Before enrolling, the more useful question is not whether the course is good, but whether this is the right moment and the right topic for where your work needs to go.

Courses are also intensive relative to their length, usually requiring several hours a week over six to twelve weeks alongside a full schedule. People who enroll without blocking time tend to fall behind early. Check 2U GetSmarter’s site for current courses, dates, and fees.
