An impact goal does not describe what you will do. It describes what will change. That is the difference between \u201crun ten workshops\u201d and \u201chelp participants find durable employment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Most goals we set are really activity goals. They measure effort, not result. An impact goal keeps its eyes on the change you are after.<\/p>\n

Why confusing activity and impact is costly<\/h2>\n

You hit the goal and change nothing<\/h3>\n

You can complete every planned activity and still produce no real change. The activity goal is met; the impact is zero. It is the most common trap.<\/p>\n

You measure what is easy, not what matters<\/h3>\n

Activities are simple to count; change is harder to capture. For convenience, people set goals on what counts easily and forget the purpose.<\/p>\n

An impact goal starts from the change<\/h2>\n

In my framework, impact \u2014 the fourth pillar \u2014 is what actually changes because of your work. So an impact goal states that change first: for whom, and how their situation will be different. The activity comes after, as a means to that end, never the reverse.<\/p>\n

What impact measurement taught me<\/h2>\n

At the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, I built measurement frameworks and monitoring and evaluation plans. The work always began with the same question: what change are we trying to produce? A well-set impact goal flows directly from that answer, and then dictates what to measure.<\/p>\n

How to set impact goals<\/h2>\n

State the change, not the action<\/h3>\n

Frame the goal as a result for someone: \u201cso that X is able to\u2026\u201d rather than \u201cto do Y.\u201d The verb should describe a change, not a task.<\/p>\n

Make it honestly measurable<\/h3>\n

Attach an impact indicator \u2014 one that measures what changes, not the activity \u2014 and a before-and-after comparison.<\/p>\n

Connect it to a credible logic<\/h3>\n

Check that your activities can plausibly produce that change. That is the role of a theory of change: linking what you do to the impact you intend.<\/p>\n

Stay modest and verifiable<\/h3>\n

A modest, real impact goal beats an ambitious, unverifiable promise. Credibility comes from honesty, not from the scale you announce.<\/p>\n
