To tell if your work has real social impact, check three things: something specific changed, that change holds after your involvement ends, and you can point to at least one honest sign of it. Miss any one of the three and what you have is a good intention, not proven impact.<\/p>\n

Good intentions are common. Verified change is rare.<\/p>\n

Why this is harder than it looks<\/h2>\n

Social impact is the real, lasting change produced for people, communities, or society, not the intention behind an action, and not the activity itself.<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ve sat across from founders certain their work mattered, who had never once checked whether it held six months later.<\/p>\n

The distinction that changes how you see it<\/h2>\n

Intention is not impact. Activity is not impact. A workshop delivered with the best intentions in the world, that changes nothing once it ends, is not social impact. It’s a well-meant event.<\/p>\n

How to check your own work<\/h2>\n

Name the specific change<\/h3>\n

Name the specific change you believe you’re producing, and who it’s for.<\/p>\n

Ask whether it lasts<\/h3>\n

Ask whether that change lasts once your involvement stops.<\/p>\n

Find one honest sign of it<\/h3>\n

Find one honest, verifiable sign of it, a before and after, a documented case, a number you didn’t cherry-pick.<\/p>\n

Treat gaps as unproven, not false<\/h3>\n

If you can’t answer one of the first three, treat the claim as unproven, not false. Go find out.<\/p>\n

A concrete example<\/h2>\n

At CitizenUp, a campaign’s social impact wasn’t the petition signatures. It was the specific policy or corporate practice that changed afterward, and whether that change held once the campaign moved on. At the Miller Center, the marker wasn’t attendance. It was whether a fellow’s venture was still running, and still employing people, a year later.<\/p>\n

No. Charity describes the intention behind giving. Social impact describes whether a verifiable, lasting change resulted. A charitable act can produce no measurable impact, and a commercial venture can produce real social impact as a byproduct.<\/p>\n
