To build an impact measurement practice you can trust, define the change you’re actually after before you collect any data, map the logic connecting your work to it, and choose one or two honest indicators you can compare over time. Everything else is detail layered on top of that foundation.<\/p>\n

Most organizations I’ve worked with skip straight to picking indicators. They build the measurement before they’ve named the change or the logic connecting their work to it. The indicators end up measuring whatever was easy to count, not what actually mattered.<\/p>\n

Why this is harder than it looks<\/h2>\n

Impact measurement is the systematic effort to assess the change produced by an action, replacing \u201cwe think we made a difference\u201d with evidence.<\/em><\/p>\n

The distinction that changes how you see it<\/h2>\n

Monitoring tracks whether you’re doing what you planned. Impact measurement tracks whether what you planned actually produced the change you claimed. Both matter. Only one answers the question people usually mean when they ask if the work is working.<\/p>\n

Choose one or two honest indicators with a clear before and after, not a dozen vanity numbers.<\/p>\n

Handle attribution honestly<\/h3>\n

Name the other factors that could explain the result, and don’t claim more credit than the evidence supports.<\/p>\n

Revisit the practice periodically<\/h3>\n

An indicator that made sense at the start can stop being useful once conditions change.<\/p>\n

A concrete example<\/h2>\n

At the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship, tracking more than a thousand alumni meant resisting the urge to report every number available, applications received, sessions attended, satisfaction scores, and instead holding onto the two or three that answered the real question: did ventures survive, and did they create durable employment. Everything else was context, not proof.<\/p>\n
